Week 03 2D Design

GROUP EXERCISE

= Creative thinking techniques =

o Generating design ideas – random word combos
o Inventing options – making variations
  • •  5 mins - Read W03 Creative Thinking in Handouts
  • •  25 mins - Each group creates ONE word combo
  • •  Each person in the group creates TWO 2D design options - based on the chosen word combo

We all pick 2 word from the list for self, than combine into group. I choose "cherry and ball" and thinking about cherry flavour food or cherry colour basketball sort of thing. I think is a bit lazy choice because they are both the same shape. Cherill pick "cherry and cloud" from the list. I like this combination, I think it's romantic and creative. Both of girls in the group had "cherry" so we decide cherry as our first word combo and guys choose another which is Paul 's favourite "skull". This is a big challenge for me because skull is never my thing and never be my style.

The only thing came out from my small brain in the first minutes is the skull with cherry stalk. But how come skull got a cherry stalk. So I just image a cheery with stalk got 2 bite than looks like a skull. I thought I've got a cherry as body, so the other one I wanna swap to make skull as body. So I made a skull who always wants a cherry tattoo before she die ......I put colour blue as base because skull is kind of blue, pale and gloomy thing.

Practical - Design Options

40 mins - Draft a range of 3 excellent design concepts for your exhibition portfolio
  • Use any tools you wish
  • Put the results and a paragraph of description in your blog
  • Invent 2 different options for each of the 3 designs
  • Describe how each of these options differ in
             。Shape    。media     。Style
Or any 3 criteria of your own choosing - list these criteria clearly

1. Christmas card
  •     Skycity table game christmas card
Making a christmas card for my work mate. In casino table games, there's nickname for every value of chips. $25 is Pony, $100 is Tiger,  $500 is monkey, $1000 is gorilla and $5000 is banana. All those chips gets together are like a park, I can image all those animals playing under the banana tree.
。Shape : B5 square .
。Media : I'll try to use illustrator to make simplify draw and graphic. Than print out on a colour hard paper as the main card. Print another on a normal white paper, than use different colour hard paper to cut out the shape of all those animals and tree and paste on main card to present a perspective card.
。Style: Realism cartoon

Brief quick draw by Illustrator for free draw techniques practice. (even say quick draw, still took 1 hour)

  • Christmas card for my personal friends
Shape: piggy shape and about B5 size
Media: Same as skycity christmas card
Style: normal

Research - Airbrush skill

This is small airbrush painting. I think this is more quicker and easy way to make shape and tone than pencil painting. But also very easy to rub everything if not be very carefully. The colour presenting very nice, it can be make like  a print out poster or I could say it is actually much more nice presenting than a print our poster. But need to be very protect self when painting in case of breath in too much ink.

Amazing airbrush painting. This is what I said better than a print out poster.

Graffiti Fine Art

The common  airbrush paint skill that we can see everywhere. I think they are great painter with more fun and freedom. most of the street graffiti that I've see are good and amazing. I think they must have a lot of practice before that. But where?? A lot of practice means a lot of big wall.  I'm just be very esteem that they are enjoy what they are doing so much.

Week 02 - 3D DESIGN

= PRACTICAL – Design Choices =

35 mints - Create a design for a CDU Design Student Shoulder Bag

Use any tools you wish Put the results and a paragraph of description in your blog Address these 3 points of difference in your design

o  Shape : A3 Square
o  Media : Illustrator, photoshop, Kraft paper and shoestring
o  Style : Pop colourful

This is actually just like a normal shopping bag. A3 size big is a good size for documents, books, student work and sketch books. The ideas of the material in making it are hard paper be cove by kraft paper or shower curtain. Cover with hard paper is to make it stronger, so do shower curtain. Another good way in using shower curtain is the function of  water proof. The style is Pop art colourful style. I think Pop art could able to tell a rich and colourful future life of student. I'll use illustrator to create the letters of " Charles Darwin University ; Change your world" than photoshop my Pop style background and put them together. The handle will try to use shoestring.

I found this pop style indoor design while I'm doing pop style bags research. The shape  all round.  Round makes me feel smooth and easy going. The indoor design looks fresh, fashion and comfortable. White colour as base, perfect match with any other colour. the designer also use mostly warm colour like red, different level of orange and brown, makes people feel like sitting at home.

Week 01 - 3D

This is one of the photo that I took when I visited and walked around the park and garden of Heide Museum of Modern Art down at Melbourne. This stack design seems from a very simple symbol but fully art feeling. It also giving a relax and nature modern visual in this kind of park and rural view. A normal sculpture which be make by other material such as bronze statue would presenting incompatible in this rural scenery.

If you have ever walk down the city mall of Adelaide than you would have to see those cute pig sculpture.  I found they are funny and cute because they look like walking around people and some are like this... trying to find food from bin and there' s also rubbish sculpture on the top of the bin which is adorable!!

Walking along the singapore river in Singapore, you'll see those kids statue which is also famous in Singapore. Those kids with only underwear jumping into the city river, this design is very lively.

A falling library/ Melbourne city.
A little block of library building lying outside the main entry of Victoria Library. What do you think they are trying to telling? I'm thinking it might tells : people now busy in TV, computer, mobile and game...etc, and not normally read, therefore the library falling...

Ideally sauce little pot with spoon. This is what I found in a Japanese restaurant. It's small like a chocolate ball. I like small delicate things.

DARREN FRISINA’S AWESOME PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS

Reference : http://pencilfury.tumblr.com/

Darren Frisina is a australia graphic designer with strong illustrator skill. His skill in using colour pencil in drawing illustration is what I like to follow. The colour pencil drawing to presenting perspective image is brilliant and the style is what I like. If I could able try to get close the be like that, my kid's story book will be no problem. So using 2D drawing to present 3D visual, can we say this is 3D?

Week 01 - 2D (HOMEWORK)

GROUP EXERCISE

Queenie: I like the logo design of the library. People name this kind of  tree as “ Tree of knowledge”. We are able to see this in front of CDU information center and also each Darwin library. I don’t like the look of this website. It’s totally “no design” on this page. But the  front of  ART MUSIC is creative.

Katelyn: This page is very badly designed; the background graphics draw the eye and are unpleasant to look at. The Header of the webpage is too busy(a simple text graphic would have been more effective, or a focus on the text with a simple background image – if any image at all), the text on the page is difficult to read due to the background image.
